5 Reasons why you should get your kids into golf

Article by Golf England

Golf is a great game for all the family – and you’re never too young to start! Here’s five reasons why you should get your kids into golf:

  • It’s the perfect generation game, the sport that all the family can play together
  • It’s great for sporty kids, but it’s equally good and a real confidence-booster for children who dislike more physical sports
  • It’s an ideal way of getting youngsters outdoors in the fresh air and off their digital devices
  • It’s an easy way to get good exercise without it feeling like a chore
  • It teaches personal skills which will last a lifetime

How to get started?

Visit  Club Finder to learn about clubs and opportunities close to where you live.

Many clubs run special junior sessions at weekends and in schools holidays. Just call up your local club and find out what’s on offer and how they welcome children and families.

Check out the Golf Foundation charity, which takes the game into schools and has HSBC Golf Roots Centres, teaching golf and Skills for Life at hundreds of clubs across the country. Even more clubs use their Junior Passport learning programme which is endorsed by the Professional Golfers’ Association.

Warning! Your children may well get hooked on the sport. So also ask local clubs about junior memberships. There are great offers around, with some clubs providing additional attractions, like adventure golf.

And if your youngster shows talent they’ll find lots of encouragement. There are club, county, regional and England coaching schemes for promising players. They could be following in the footsteps of Justin Rose, Tommy Fleetwood, Georgia Hall and Charley Hull! Take a look at what a great 2018 they had here.

Keeping your children safe

Our top priority is making sure that clubs safeguard children and young people in golf.

Every club should have a welfare officer to deal with any concerns and to liaise with us – whether this is about bullying, unrealistic expectations of children or poor planning.

Golf England just launched  SafeGolf accreditation for clubs with high standards of safeguarding. All our GolfMark clubs meet this standard and they’re easy to find. Simply look out for the logo on our club finder! It’s the sign of a junior and beginner friendly club.

Girls Golf Rocks

Golf really is rocking for girls! Golf England got together with the Golf Foundation to run a fantastic campaign to show girls aged 5-18 that golf is fun and friendly.

Girls Golf Rocks ran in 21 counties in 2018 and 1600 girls took part in taster sessions, with many going on to take coaching courses. It will run again in 2019 and you can find out more here.
